Quick answer: SEO focuses on discoverability in search engines. AEO, or answer engine optimization, is commonly used for work that makes information useful for direct answers. GEO focuses on visibility in generated responses. These labels overlap, and their definitions vary. Choose the work according to the customer journey and platform rather than treating each acronym as a separate mandatory service.

The terminology can make a straightforward website decision feel unnecessarily complicated. A clear service page with an accurate answer, useful evidence and accessible text can help several discovery journeys. Rebuilding the same content three times under different labels rarely adds value.
The comparison below is a practical interpretation of industry terminology. It is not a shared technical standard agreed by Google, OpenAI and every other provider.
Compare objectives and observable outcomes
| Term | Main emphasis | Example work | Observable outcomes |
|---|---|---|---|
| SEO | Discovery through relevant search results. | Technical access, service pages, useful content and internal links. | Search impressions, visits, enquiries and sales. |
| AEO | Clear answers to specific questions. | Definitions, concise explanations, structured comparisons and useful FAQs. | Appearance in an answer experience where it can be verified. |
| GEO | Business and source visibility in generated responses. | Evidence-rich content, clear business identity and platform-specific access checks. | Mentions, citations, referrals and recommendations in sampled responses. |
An article can serve more than one purpose. A detailed guide to choosing a marketing agency can attract conventional search visitors, answer a narrow question and become a source in an AI response. None of those outcomes is guaranteed by its format.
Understand the shared foundations
All three approaches benefit from a clear purpose for each page. Explain the subject in readable text, connect related resources and make the business behind the advice identifiable. Provide sources for factual claims and avoid publishing material that simply repeats what is already available without adding a useful contribution.
Answer-first writing is helpful because readers can quickly understand the conclusion. It should not remove the qualifications, reasoning or detail needed to make the answer accurate. A short statement that oversimplifies a complex decision is not an improvement.
Likewise, tables and FAQs are tools for communication. Use a table when the reader needs to compare parallel options. Use an FAQ when there are genuine follow-up questions. Their presence does not establish expertise by itself.
Keep the platform distinction visible
Google Search's AI Overviews and AI Mode, Gemini Apps and ChatGPT are different products. A recommendation for one should not be presented as a rule for all three. Google explicitly says its existing SEO practices remain relevant to its AI Search features and that special AI markup is not required for them.
OpenAI separately documents its search crawler. Gemini's help describes sources and related links within its responses. Those documents answer different questions: access, Search eligibility and the presentation of sources. They do not reveal a common ranking recipe.
When evaluating a proposal, ask the provider to name the product and the evidence behind each technical recommendation. “Google uses AI” is not enough to establish that a Google Search setting controls every Gemini experience.
Prioritize according to your starting point
If important service pages are inaccessible or unclear, fix them first. If customers keep asking the same buying question, create a complete answer. If your business appears incorrectly in observed assistant responses, inspect the available source information and correct the records you control.
For an established website with useful content, the next priority may be better proof: a transparent case study, a comparison based on real evaluation or a documented process. For a new website, foundational service information and navigation may matter more than an ambitious citation-monitoring programme.
Use customer impact and effort to choose the sequence. Avoid funding a technical feature merely because its name contains “AI.”
Assign different measures to different questions
Search analytics can help explain conventional discovery, while a controlled prompt sample can document generated answers. A CRM can show whether enquiries become suitable projects. Keep the boundaries between these measures explicit.
If a guide gains organic visits but no observed AI citations, that does not make it a failed customer resource. If a page receives citations but attracts the wrong audience, it may not be helping the business. Interpret the result in relation to the original objective.
Write one content plan with distinct page roles and platform checks. This gives the team a coherent workload without losing the differences between the discovery experiences.
Frequently asked questions
Is AEO just adding an FAQ section?
No. A useful direct answer can appear in the main article, a comparison or a service explanation. A generic FAQ block is not a substitute for answering the real question.
Should we buy separate SEO and GEO packages?
Only when the scope and responsibilities justify the distinction. Ask how overlapping research, content and technical work will be coordinated and priced.
Which acronym should a small business focus on first?
Start with the customer problem. Ensure the right people can discover, understand and evaluate your offer, then measure the channels they actually use.
